tri-africa
...TIA - this is Africa...
Tri-Africa was an idea inspired in 2016, after travelling multiple times across the Tanzania-Kenya border, in-between working on Africa's highest mountains. As the old saying goes, it's about the journey, not the destination, and the travelling proved to be just as entertaining and memorable as the summits themselves.
Tri-Africa is a unique expedition, offered by no-one else, taking you overland through Africa and to the summits of three iconic mountains: Mt. Kenya, Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. This in-country, 3-week expedition features all of the best bits of each respective mountain's itinerary, as well as some special variations and extras: Two nights in Africa's most famous hotel, two nights out on safari, an afternoon of white water rafting or rock climbing, fishing on Mt. Kenya, and an exclusive trip to Mt. Meru's ash cone...
Not only that, this expedition offers you an opportunity to attempt Mt. Kilimanjaro whilst at an extreme advantage; Having already acclimatised on two summits above 4'500m, as well as learning useful lessons along the way, you will have an un-paralleled chance of success. And, with the highest saved until last, the expedition naturally builds to a sensational and unforgettable end. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... This. Is. Africa.
I only run bespoke, private expeditions, so please Get In Contact for further information and prices.

kenya → Meru → Kilimanjaro |
1st September - Depart UK/USA > Arrive Nairobi (1 night at Giraffe Manor)
Our first day on expedition! Today we depart to Africa for 3 weeks! Dependant upon your arrival time you may have the chance to explore the local area, soak up the rays by the pool or visit either the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or the Giraffe Sanctuary. Tonight we spend our first night in Africa's most famous hotel: Giraffe Manor.
2nd September - Preparation Day in Nairobi > Travel Chogoria // Alternative arrival day (1 night at Lowlands Hotel & Spa)
This day is extremely useful for a number of reasons. We will go through a detailed itinerary, conduct a complete kit check, and discuss crucial health and safety elements for our time in Africa. We will have the chance to collect any additional equipment from town, exchange money if required, acclimatise to the local climate and overcome any tiredness from the journey. In the afternoon we take a 4-hr drive to our hotel near Chogoria, Lowlands Hotel & Spa, situated on the East side of the mountain, where we will begin our trek the following day. This day also serves as an additional arrival day for late-comers or lost luggage.
3rd September - Trek Day 1: Chogoria > Chogoria Bandas (1 night on Mt. Kenya)
After a short drive to the Chogoria gate, excitedly we enter the national park at 1600m and climb steadily though luscious forests to our campsite for the night, the Chogoria Bandas (2950m). Today is the largest altitude gain of the whole trek (yet fortunately at the lowest altitude!), so after a good day's hiking we retire to our beds and fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest.
4th September - Trek Day 2: Chogoria Bandas > Lake Ellis (1 night on Mt. Kenya)
Leaving the forests behind, we trace a path through giant heather, moorlands and tussock grasses, passing beautiful flowers such as Gladiolus and Senecio in bloom. Soon we emerge at a stream, an outflow of our later camp-side lake. After crossing this, we continue on, passing by Nithi Falls and steep landscapes, soon arriving at the stunning campsite at Lake Ellis (3500m).
5th September - Trek Day 3: Lake Ellis > Mintos huts > Lake Michaelson (1 night on Mt. Kenya)
Today serves as a valuable acclimatisation day, briefly climbing higher than our eventual sleeping altitude. The walk is remote and off the beaten track. We set off from Lake Ellis (3500m), before crossing the valley and following a ridge up the mountainside. From here we join the main track of the Chogoria route, at an altitude of 4200m. Awe-inspiring views greet us, spanning across the Gorges Valley and down towards Itinguni and the Northern Moorlands. Here we have the option of detouring along a large plateau to the Mintos huts (4300m) for lunch. From here we can stare down the 150m vertical 'Temple' cliff, to the picturesque Lake Michaelson (4000m) below, and our home for the night. Briefly retracing our steps sees us descending to the lake, where we spend the rest of the afternoon fishing and resting before bed. Another day in paradise.
6th September - Trek Day 4: Lake Michaelson > Simba Tarn* (1 night on Mt. Kenya)
Our day begins leisurely beside the lake, with only a short distance to walk today. Initially we climb out of the beautiful gorge that we have spent the night, up to the far side of the Mintos huts (4300m), to join the main track once again at 4400m. From here only a short journey and a few hundreds metres are between us and our next beautiful camp for the night, Simba Tarn (4600m).
*Some itineraries will involve camping at the Mintos huts (4300m) on this day. This will be confirmed at the time of booking.
7th September - Trek Day 5 (1st Summit Day!): Simba Tarn > Mt. Kenya (Point Lenana) > Old Moses camp (1 night on Mt. Kenya)
Today's the day; Our first summit is in sight! We leave Simba Tarn (4600m) in the early hours, following the track for a short while, before negotiating the final easy rock bands to our stunning destination of Mt. Kenya's trekking summit, Point Lenana (4985m). Congratulations! You have made it to the top for an incredible sunrise! Views like none you've ever seen before, stretching as far and wide as the eye can see, even across to Mt. Kilimanjaro on clear days. After celebrating, we descend the West side of the mountain, following the fantastic Sirimon route, initially down screes to Shipton's camp (4200m), where we take a short break, before continuing along a wonderful 'balcony' walk, through senecio- and lobelia-forests (the craziest trees you'll ever see!). We stop briefly at the Liki river (3700m), before continuing down to our final camp on the trek, Old Moses camp (3400m).
8th September - Trek Day 6: Old Moses camp > Sirimon gate > Nanyuki > Ol Pejeta Conservancy (1 night at Sweetwaters Serena Camp)
Our final sunrise on the most beautiful mountain in Africa. By this stage you'll be thankful that the distance today is short, and the journey all downhill. We rise early, so as to make the most of the day ahead, re-entering the rainforest and following a jeep track, soon arriving at the Sirimon gate, and the end of the road. We are accompanied by an armed ranger during this section of the journey, as frequently baboons and other wildlife can be encountered on the track. Zebra welcome us at the gate and we wave goodbye to our mountain crew, taking with us a new-found love for Africa, having visited its best kept secret...
From the Sirimon gate we take a 1hr-drive through the city of Nanyuki and onto the Ol Pejeta Conservancy park gate. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts all of the 'Big 5' (lion, leopard rhino, elephant, buffalo), two of the world's last remaining Northern white rhinos, as well as many other incredible species of mammals and birds. Once through the park gate, a short drive past 'Equator point' takes us to our hotel within the park, Sweetwaters Serena Camp. After freshening up and enjoying an early lunch, we head out on an afternoon safari. Further snacks and drinks will be provided while on the safari, and another wonderful meal will await our return.
9th September - Depart Nanyuki > Arrive Sagana > White Water Rafting / Rock Climbing (1 night at Savage Camp)
After waking up once again in paradise, we take a 2.5hr-drive to the Savage Camp in Sagana, home of the Tana river and 'Baboon Rock'. Flowing from its headwaters in the Aberdare Range and Mt. Kenya, the Tana river is the longest river in Kenya. It hosts an abundance of birdlife amongst its forested banks, as well as as hippos, crocodiles, elephant, and a range of primates. After lunch we will have the option to tackle a 16km stretch of white water, including rapids known as the 'Can of Worms', visit the nearby 'Baboon Rock' where we can enjoy an afternoon of superb rock climbing, with the likely audience of baboons, or simply relax by the pool. Either way, you will have worked up an appetite by the evening; An all-you-can-eat feast and celebratory drinks await, before sleeping to the sound of snoring hippos...
10th September - Depart Sagana > Arrive Nairobi (1 night at Giraffe Manor)
Today we travel back to Nairobi, and appreciate the chance for a slower paced day, having been non-stop up until now! Once back in Nairobi and settled into the hotel, you will have a free afternoon to spend as you please. There is another opportunity to visit both the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Sanctuary at this stage, as well as other attractions nearby such as the Nairobi National Museum or the Maasai Markets. This is our final night in Kenya during the trip, so take the opportunity to buy some souvenirs, as tomorrow we depart to Tanzania. Tonight we spend our second and final night in Africa's most famous hotel: Giraffe Manor.
11th September - Depart Nairobi > Arrive Moshi (1 night at Weru Weru Lodge)
Tanzania awaits and our transport will arrive at dawn to see us beat the traffic out of Nairobi. We drive overland, across varying qualities of road surfaces, to reach the Tanzanian border. Passports and patience at the ready, we humourously make our way across the Namanga border and are swiftly back on the straight roads to Moshi. Once past the Mt. Longido Forest Reserve, we begin to see the silhouette of Mt. Kilimanjaro rising up to the East, its enormous and iconic flat top casting its shadow onto the savannah beneath. After a comical and eventful journey we reach our welcoming and luxurious accommodation, Weru Weru Lodge, situated a short drive from the Arusha National Park and the road to Mt. Meru. The swimming pool usually sees a few visitors this afternoon! After dinner, we sit down and finalise our plans for tomorrow, with plenty of time in the morning to prepare.
12th September - Trek Day 1: Moshi > Momella gate > Miriakamba huts (1 night on Mt. Meru)
We start the day by taking a game drive from Moshi to the Momella gate (1500m), and the start of our second trek. Our trek begins with a gentle journey from Momella gate (1500m) to the Miriakamba huts (2500m). We journey via the Southern route, under the cover of dense montane forest, via the 'Kili viewpoint' and the 'fig tree'. During our journey it is very likely that we will see wildlife, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, bush buck, dikdik, and buffalo, hence the need for an armed ranger during this part of the trek.
13th September - Trek Day 2: Miriakamba huts > Saddle huts (Little Meru) (1 night on Mt. Meru)
Our armed ranger will accompany us for a short while initially today. We trek from Mirikamba huts (2500m) to the Saddle huts (3500m) in the morning, using a series of well travelled switch-backs to gain height easily up the steep ridge viewed from camp. Soon the montane forest is left behind and we enter the moorland zone. During our journey we get fabulous views across to Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895m) and the cities of Arusha and Moshi, as well as our goal of Mt. Meru (4566m). After arriving at the Saddle huts (3500m) we have a few hours rest before enjoying a short acclimatisation trek to the summit of Little Meru (3800m), offering views across to our journey tomorrow.
14th September - Trek Day 3 (2nd Summit Day!): Saddle huts > Rhino Point > Mt. Meru (Socialist Peak) > Miriakamba huts (1 night on Mt. Meru)
The second day we have all been waiting for. An early start sees us heading out under the cover of moonlight. Fortunately our day starts gently and we warm up by trekking along relatively-flat, undulating terrain. We then begin our ascent to Rhino Point (3800m), once again on switch-backs, gradually taking us up and out of the moorland zone and into the alpine desert. From Rhino Point (3800m) we make a short descent before beginning our final ascent to the summit. Skirting the edge of the crater, our ascent follows sandy and rocky tracks, before culminating in an exciting yet simple rock band, which we negotiate easily to the summit of Mt. Meru (Socialist Peak) (4566m). After enjoying the sunrise and soaking up the views, we begin our descent in reverse, back to the welcoming sight of Saddle huts (3500m). We rest for a couple of hours before taking the journey back down to the Miriakamba huts (2500m), where a well-deserved shower awaits.
15th September - Trek Day 4: Miriakamba huts > Ash Cone > Momella gate* > Moshi (1 night at Weru Weru Lodge)
Today we have a rare and exciting opportunity to stand at the very edge of the mountain's history, and glimpse into what was once a very real and active volcano. Very few people get the chance to visit this stunning spot. From the Miriakamba huts (2500m) we enter 'buffalo country' and follow a lesser-travelled track through thick bush, before emerging onto the flanks of the ash cone. A careful path through old, sharp, volcanic rock guides us up the final slopes. After a short section of switch-backs we arrive at the rim of the ash cone and gaze into its impressive depths, marvelling at what once was. After circumnavigating the ash cone we descend via the same route and continue to descend to the Momella gate (1500m). This time we go direct, taking the faster Northern route. The route is steep initially and never quite under the cover of the montane forest which surrounds us. We detour to a beautiful waterfall on our way down to cool off. As we descend further we are trekking on open grasslands, and we have the chance of spotting giraffe, zebra and elephant. We arrive back at Weru Weru Lodge in Moshi for around 5pm and get an early night ahead of our final challenge.
*After visiting the ash cone and returning to Miriakamba huts (2500m) there is also an option to take a jeep down to the Momella gate (1500m), so as to arrive back at our hotel earlier. Similarly, the ash cone can be skipped altogether.
16th September - Trek Day 1: Moshi > Machame gate > Machame camp (1 night on Mt. Kilimanjaro)
After re-fuelling with a hearty breakfast, we drive from Moshi to the Machame gate (1800m), the gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park. Our third trek begins with a journey through montane forest to Machame camp (3000m). During our journey it is very likely that we will see wildlife, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, a range of wonderful birds and an array of beautiful flowers.
17th September - Trek Day 2: Machame camp > Shira camp (1 night on Mt. Kilimanjaro)
Soon the montane forest is left behind and quickly we find ourselves above the canopy and in the moorland. Mud tracks turn to dust as we emerge onto the Shira plateau, with the summit of Shira (4000m) in view. We spend our second night on the mountain at Shira camp (3850m).
18th September - Trek Day 3: Shira camp > Lava Tower > Barranco camp (1 night on Mt. Kilimanjaro)
Our journey today continues upwards, following dusty, rocky trails to Barranco camp (4000m). In the morning we gain height and the trail leads us via the Lava Tower (4600m), an impressive volcanic plug that sits just beside the trail. At 4600m we would normally begin to feel the altitude, but after already summiting two mountains we feel absolutely fine! After an enforced rest and a bite for lunch, we begin to descend to our camp for the night. During our descent we pass through another magnificent senecio- and lobelia-forest. Yes, more of those whacky trees!
19th September - Trek Day 4: Barranco camp > Karanga camp > Barafu camp* > Kosovo camp (1 night on Mt. Kilimanjaro)
After our journey via Lava Tower (4600m) yesterday, and all of our previous altitude over the last two weeks, today should feel like a walk in the park, however, as we are already well-acclimatised we opt to set off early and gain a fair bit of altitude today. After surmounting the Barranco wall (a lot easier than it looks!), we continue gently across a broad ridge and a gently-rising path. Before you know it we have reached Karanga camp (4000m), our lunch stop for the day. A steady rise, a stroll through Barafu camp (4600m), and a final climb over easy, rocky slabs, later, brings us up to our resting place at the base of the screes. Kosovo camp (4800m) marks our highest point before our final summit bid of the trip. Having reached camp, we are efficient with finalising our plan for tomorrow, ensure all of our kit is prepared in advance and get an early rest ahead of our third summit day!
*Some itineraries will involve camping at Barafu camp (4600m) on this day (1hr from Kosovo camp (4800m)). This is dependant upon numbers and will be confirmed at the time of booking.
20th September - Trek Day 5 (3rd Summit Day!): Kosovo camp > Mt. Kilimanjaro (Uhuru Peak) > Millennium camp* (1 night on Mt. Kilimanjaro)
The third and final day we have all been eagerly anticipating! We wake before the earliest hour and begin our ascent via switch-backs in the screes. Under torch beams and the flicker of moonlight we steadily progress upwards. With Stella Point (5800m) in sight we begin to feel the warmth from the sun, as the first rays of daylight rise up from behind Mawenzi (5150m). After a short break we muster the energy to make the final push to the incredible summit of Uhuru Peak (5895m); the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro; the Roof of Africa and our third summit of the trip! From here the views stretch far and wide, and are absolutely breath-taking and our feeling of elation un-rivalled. On a clear day you can see all the way across the Shira plateau, to the savannahs beneath, and even further to Mt. Meru and sometimes all the way to Mt. Kenya! After basking in the glory of our third summit we begin our descent, returning via the same route. After a quick lunch stop at Barafu camp (4600m) we continue down to our well deserved final campsite on the final mountain of the trip, Millennium camp (3800m).
*Some itineraries may continue down to Mweka camp (3100m) (1.5hrs from Millennium camp (3800m)). This is dependant upon numbers and will be confirmed at the time of booking.
21st September - Trek Day 6: Millennium camp > Mweka gate (1 night at Weru Weru Lodge)
With our expedition almost over, today is our last opportunity to sing and dance with our mountain crew. After a morning to remember, and with heavy hearts (and heavy legs!), we take our final steps down to the Mweka gate (1800m). We say our goodbyes and give thanks to our local team before making the drive back to Weru Weru Lodge in Moshi, where hot showers and a celebratory meal awaits. Let the party begin!
22nd September - Overnight Safari* (1 night on Safari)
Today we celebrate our achievements by heading out on a day and night safari. Although this means another early start, it will be totally worth it. Both the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area or the Tarangire National Park serve as an opportunity to see even more wildlife, including any remaining members of the 'Big 5' (lion, leopard rhino, elephant, buffalo) that haven't been spotted, as well as cheetah and hippo. Our final night of the trip is spent under canvas, sleeping beneath the Milkyway, listening to the sounds of Africa: Why settle for 5 stars when you can have a million?
*Overnight safari is optional, for anyone who may require an early flight the following day. Similarly, a day safari is also optional if you would prefer to do your own thing, or require a flight on this day instead.
23rd September - Depart Moshi > Arrive UK/USA*
After arriving back from safari all we have time for is to freshen up, purchase a few souvenirs and share our emotional goodbyes, before we make our individual journeys home/onwards. After such a long and enriching experience, and memories from three different mountains and everything else in between, there is no doubt that you will suffer post-expedition blues, normally before you've even made it home... The only cure for this is to book the next expedition...
*We will arrive in the UK/USA on the 24th of September, in the early hours of the morning. An additional night at the hotel can be easily arranged for anyone who wishes to depart on the 24th of September.
"Outstanding experience with Alex, he showed maturity and experience way beyond his years and was very comfortable with all of the team. I would highly recommend him and would definitely go on another trip with him as expedition leader."
